Diamond Grading Report

What Is a Diamond Grading Report?

A diamond grading report scientifically describes all the quality characteristics of a diamond (including carat, color, clarity, cut, fluorescence, etc.). A diamond grading report also ensures that the diamond you are buying is natural or lab-grown, and any post-treatments to improve color or clarity are recorded. No matter where in the world, only diamonds with authoritative and reliable IGI / GIA diamond grading reports can be purchased with confidence.

IGI / GIA Lab Grown Diamond Grading Report

The Lab Grown Diamond Grading Reports issued by International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are recognized as the most credible reports, and are the basis for the purchase and sale of lab grown diamonds around the world. The greatest role of the report is to inspect the quality of the lab grown diamonds, thus safeguarding the interests of every customer.

Lab grown diamonds are evaluated and graded using the same rigorous standards as natural diamonds. Both IGI and GIA will record the quality of lab diamonds in detail, including carat, color, clarity, cut (commonly known as 4Cs), as well as fluorescence reaction and size ratio, etc. Reports for diamonds over one carat usually include plots of diamond inclusions too. The report will clearly indicate that the diamond is lab-grown and will also indicate if the lab diamond was manufactured by High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method. In addition, the report will state whether any post-growth treatment that changes color was detected, or if the treatment could not be determined.

IGI is the first credible laboratory to provide grading reports for gem-quality lab grown diamonds, while GIA officially launched its lab grown diamond grading report in 2019. In addition, GIA's lab grown diamond grading report is only available in electronic version, and the issuance fee is also higher than IGI's report. Therefore, the majority (>90%) of lab grown diamonds on the market today are accompanied by IGI grading reports.

IGI offers a hard copy of the Lab Grown Diamond Grading Report, which contains the same information as the IGI Natural Diamond Grading Report, but the lab grown report is in yellow color.

GIA's Lab Grown Diamond Grading Reports are only available electronically, which can be viewed online.

Report Number Laser Inscription

Report number laser inscription is an efficient and simple method for diamond identification. The diamond is associated with specific report data through the report number inscribed on the diamond's girdle. At present, the world's two major gemological laboratories, IGI and GIA, will engrave the report number on the girdle of the diamond by laser, and they even add "LABGROWN" or "LABORATORY-GROWN" to the girdle of lab diamonds to protect consumers' right to know.

All lab grown diamonds over 0.50cts sold by Diamond Culture are laser inscribed with IGI or GIA report number. We will provide a magnifying device to confirm that the diamond purchased by customers corresponds to the report.

Grading Report Verification

Both IGI and GIA provide online verification service which allows customers to confirm that the information on the Diamond Grading Report or Diamond Dossier they receive is the same as what is recorded in the IGI / GIA database. Customers only need to enter the corresponding report number on the official websites of the two laboratories, or scan the QR code on the report, they can then quickly and easily find the information recorded on the IGI / GIA official website, including 4Cs.

Diamond Culture only sells loose lab grown diamonds above 0.50cts that come with IGI / GIA grading reports, in order to give confidence and protect the interests of customers. It is never recommended for customers to buy any diamond that is sold without a grading report issued by a trusted gemological laboratory.
